The Girls on Data Science project, initially named Gender Diversity in Data Science: Experimentation-Based Training is an initiative of professors and students of Gamma Research Group at the Federal University of Brazil (UFBA) and is funded by CNPq / MCTIC, Girls in Exact Sciences, Engineering, and Computing Call – N. 31/2018. This Project aims at supporting female students to use Data Science when identifying and coming up with solutions for social problems regarding their community. Through the development of analytical, statistical and computational thinking of low-income and mostly Afro-Brazilian students, we seek to support the contemporary processes of reversal of the country's social, racial and gender inequality
The Data Science area focuses on the verification of patterns in different data, which generates useful information for decision making. Based on Statistics, mathematics, reading and computing, it is characterized by its transversality to any theme and the need to mobilize language practices in the digital universe. It considers the technical, critical, creative, ethical and aesthetic dimensions as a way of expanding human capacities, potentialities and meaning. The exposure and usage of information lead to the propagation of new terms as “Big Data”, “Fake News”, “Internet of things”, which highlight a new period in globalization. The society must be prepared to recognize the power of its data. In addition, the understanding about the conception of mathematical models that are capable of predicting its preferences and the knowledge about their influence on the decision-making process is extremely relevant. It’s concerning that nowadays the society actively consumes and generates data, but without a critical sense. That is why it is essential to train citizens who realize that the use of data allows the improvement of problems. In addition, the future of the professions is being changed and professionals must have multiple capacities, among them, that of dealing with interdisciplinary problems and increasingly based on data. Towards a few initiatives in teaching Data Science for teenagers, this ebook is a precursor of this field in Brazil. Beyond the popular scope of commercial advertisements, through the chapters of this ebook it is possible to discuss the introductory concepts of Data Science on the perspective of health, education, environment, culture and many other aspects of the society. This fact demonstrates that Data Science allows integrated analysis based on data, statistics and specific fields which instigates the critical and analytical capacity, essential skills to promote improvements in society. Lastly, this ebook is a tool that expands the view of students in many directions and forms critical citizens through the data approach. Fortunately, they may feel stimulated to keep on studies and motivated to choose Data Science as a professional field.
